So, what actually is Instagram?

And why is everyone using it?

Has anyone ever said to you "did you see that on Instagram" and you have no idea what they're talking about? You're not alone. Whether you're curious, a bit unsure or just don't want to pretend you know what it is anymore we can help (no tech speak - promise).

Instagram is basically like a giant photo album where people you know share photos, videos and updates from all over the world.

What is it used for?

Instagram is a great source of inspiration and connection, and can be used on a phone or a tablet. Instagram is mainly used to:

  • Share photos and videos - photos from holidays, recipes, kids, pets and much more

  • Stay in touch - Instagram is a great way to stay in touch with family and friends all over the world, follow them to see what they're up to

  • Get inspired - Instagram is a great source of inspiration - from recipes to travel ideas, from hobbies to art and gardening tips

  • Fun - watch funny reels (short videos), join conversations or just enjoy a quiet scroll

If Facebook is like a Community Hall, Instagram is more like a gallery - it's visual, creative and a bit more relaxed.

What is a Post?

A Post is simply a video or photo that someone shares on Instagram. it can have a caption or short comment underneath, and people can tap a heart to 'like'. You can also leave a comment like "that looks yum" or "that's a great idea, I must try that".

What's a Reel or Story?

They are really just posts of a different kind - different types of content. A reel is a short video, often with text and music. A story can be a video or photo, which disappears after 24 hours. You can comment on stories and reels, and like them too.

Don't worry, you don't need to post yourself to enjoy these features of Instagram.

Is Instagram just for young people?

Um, definitely not! In fact, more and more people over 50 are signing up to Instagram. It's a great way to:

  • Stay in touch with family and friends all over the world

  • Share your own projects or hobbies

  • Get in touch with likeminded people

  • Explore. interests, pick up tips and information on subjects like gardening, travel, cooking, history and lots, lots more

Is Instagram safe?

Yes it is, but it's a great idea to use it wisely. You can set your settings to 'private' so only people you know or connect with can see your posts. It's also smart not to share personal information such as phone number, address or other personal details.

And just like in real life - if something feels off it usually is.

A little recap

Instagram is a simple, easy and very visual way to connect, inspire (and be inspired) and learn. it can be a window into the lives of loved ones, a place to find inspiration and information, or just soemthing to scroll and wind down over a cuppa.

The best bit? You don't need to be a tech head to enjoy it - just give it a go. Oskoole has a number of videos of visual instructions on Instagram. And remember, if you cant find it, ASK US. Because other people will have the same questions.

Happy scrolling!
